About Helen Doron method you can hear in Poland since couple of years. It began
in 80s, XXth century. Its name comes from name and surname of the author
– Helen Doron who is British. She graduated linguistics and French philology. She
started woring with children in 1985 and from that moment we has developing her
method. It’s for children from infant age till 14 years old.
Its basic plank is that imitation is the best way of learning for young
children. When the stay in touch with foreign language, that can learn it in
the same way as their mother tongue. It’s based on plays, games and songs –
activities which children like the most. Younger they are, more they like it.
The learn in colorful classes with a lot of didactic materials.
This method should be used by qualified teachers. Parents should only take care
that children do exercises which are recommended by teachers, especially
listening to CDs. On Polish official website (www.helendoron.pl)
you can find many benefits from using this method. Below I chose the most
important:
- dynamic,
- small groups
of students (up to 8),
- great
didactic materials,
- based on joy
and happiness,
- fast
effects,
- getting know
vocabulary and grammar.
The idea of
this method is very interesting for me. If I want to answer the question from
the title in this post, I should say that it’s really for children. Of
course, we can’t deny the attendance of adults, especially parents who are
always with children during classes. So I think they can take some
benefits from that. I haven’t heard about using this method at schools where
young and adults learn.
Personally,
in the future I wish to learn my kids this method. I thought about talking with
them in two languages and how we can see – that kind of method really
exists and is very well :)
