CULTURE AND LANGUAGES: Scrabble

picture source: www.rank.plI’ve just finished next favourite family game – scrabble. So why not see it closer? It was invented in 1931 in the USA by Alfred Butts. We was an architect but unemployed then and he decided to create a new board game. He counted value of letter being based on frequency of letter in the New York Times cover. First game called “Lexiko” was sold in 1946, than it changed name to “Criss Cross Words”. We wanted to turn many manufactories on his product but they claimed it’s boring. Finally he used help of retired clerk James Brunot who was keen on board games. They modified the game and changed name into Scrabble (from English word to grope). At the beginning they produced it themselves. The mass production started in 1948 when the rights for it were bought by Selchow&Righter company.
I think that most of you know the rules but I’ll remind them shortly ;) It’s for 2, 3 or 4 players. Each of them draw 7 letters and put them on special chart. First player creates his word an put it on the board – it should be put on the field in the center. The board is 15x15 fields and it reminds crossword. Next player creates his word but at least one letter should be used from the word which is already on the board. It’s possible to take a break or change letters. Counting is based on points on letters and letter/word bonuses. Additionally, when you use all 7 letters, you’ll get 50 points extra. You can create words which are in the dictionary, excluding names, short forms, prefixes, affixes. What do you need to play scrabble? It’s good to have a rich vocabulary, skill to making anagrams, observation and creativity – especially when you want to use word bonuses. You should be clever as well ;) and try to predict the next move of your partners so as to block them. You’ll win if you get the most points.Autor: Unknown Etykiety: CULTURE AND LANGUAGES | Email This BlogThis! Share to X Share to Facebook |
