I’ve noticed that self-defense courses are becoming more and more popular recently. I like it and I wanted to check it as well :) Because I like trying new kinds of spending my free time, I went to self-defense lesson. And what? I was really disappointed – it’s obvious that this kind of abilities are very useful, but the atmosphere of lesson was very stodgy. There were four women – two 25+ and two 45+ and instructor, of course. If it is about him, I don’t have any objections – fighting sports are his passion. What’s more, he told us about seminars which he is attending – it means that he’s actively involved into his hobby. What’s interesting, if this kind of person, for example having black belt in karate, will take part in fight, can have a big problem with police or even with court.
Self-defense courses should teach people how to behave in situations when we have to fight with stronger opponent. Usually there is no reason to use gun, if so – only daily necessities, for example woman’s bag ;) In self-defense technics we can find elements of aikido, karate, jujitsu or kravmaga. Below I give you short descriptions:
Aikido: it comes from Japan and is focused on throws, levers and dodges. It can contain elements of fight with a gun, but only for training purposes.
Karate: it comes from Okinawa, and we can talk about three types – as a fight for life and death (traditional karate), as a sport with elements of self-defense and as a way of physical and mental development.
Jujitsu: it also comes from Japan, it’s hand fight without any gun.
Kravmaga: it comes from Israel and is based on natural human reactions.
I think that we can talk about self-defense courses as a kind of sport and we should think about it with reflection and caution. If we don’t do any sport, we won’t achieve black belt in short time! The most important in self-defense course is that it shows us what kind of situations we can take part in and how to behave. Good instructors will tell us how to avoid danger and how to cope with panic.
